Recovering Earth from several environmental issues will be a difficult task, but it is not impossible. One of the key issues pertaining to the Earth’s environment is overpopulation. Overpopulation is most prevalent in small, poor countries. Author of Human Geography: People and the Environment William Atkins states, "To prevent this[overpopulation] from happening, the United Nations has instituted its Millennium Development Goals to encourage development in the world's poorest countries by improving their social and economic conditions" (Atkins par. 11). In order to prevent overpopulation on Earth from becoming more of a problem, the United Nations have come together and set goals to reduce reproduction rates. Overpopulation has the potential to be a major detriment to our society if not dealt with; however, reducing reproduction rates is possible with proper funding and authority. For example, organizations could set regulations allowing each woman to have only one child in third-world countries. Even though overpopulation is an arising issue on Earth, the solution is not to explore other possible environments. On the same note as overpopulation, another concern on Earth is the pollution rates. Pollution on Earth can be decreased if the world’s population does their job and makes an effort to “clean up” our Earth. According to the article “Pollution” from Gale Student Resources in Context, programs and organizations have been put into effect and have helped the Earth’s atmosphere tremendously (“Pollution” par. 10). Since Earth’s pollution rates have the potential to be decreased, the population of Earth must strive to totally eliminate the unhealthy toxins in the air. For instance, electric cars have recently been invented and actually driven by certain individuals. There are also several other ways that the pollution in the air can be eliminated. Safer ways of producing energy are being practiced and applied across the world. With that being said, Earth’s atmosphere and environment are recoverable with the population’s help and faith that it can be done. In opposition, some naysayers recommend that the government and private organizations explore other possible environments in the near future.
Certain individuals suggest that exploring possible environments is necessary due to overpopulation and pollution rates. In recent years, the thought of the Earth reaching its maximum population has become popular within society. According to Atkins, on October 31, 2011, the world’s population reached over seven billion human beings (Atkins par. 1). Overpopulation is an issue considering seven billion individuals call Earth home. In addition to the previous fact, the human population is exponentially growing. As more humans are born, more humans reproduce. An example of overpopulation causing problems on the Earth is the possibility of disease spreading. If there are more humans on Earth, then disease and illness spreading is inevitable considering living quarters and streets will become as crowded as ever. Not only will more humans on Earth cause overpopulation problems, but more people also leads to more pollution. Pollution on Earth is an issue that is difficult to treat and eliminate due to millions of individuals polluting the Earth’s environment on a daily basis. A popular belief among space exploration programs is that searching for a new habitable environment is necessary because the toxin amounts on Earth will become deadly. Some plants may not be able to grow due to the toxins in the soil caused by pollution (“Pollution” par. 7). If the Earth cannot produce edible plants, then the human race does not stand a chance, and a new environment must be established. Although space exploration programs believe the Earth will become too overpopulated and toxic to inhabit, hopeful humans complain that Earth’s population and pollution rates can be reduced if the human does their part and makes an effort to restore the great planet. If space organizations do unfortunately send humans to Mars due to a lack of resources on Earth, rational minded humans suggest sending an entire population.
